Tandoor culture has a long history of 5000 years and dates back to the Seljuks. The tandoor is an important part of humanity’s traditional heritage, still used today in many parts of rural Anatolia. Used in Central Asia, Anatolia, Pakistan, India, Iran and Arab countries, the tandoor is generally used for baking bread and keeping warm. The tandoor in Hatay is a little different as it is placed on top of the soil rather than under it as in the Eastern Anatolia Region. In Hatay, the tradition of the “Stone Oven” and the “Tandoor” is still alive and it is possible to see both in almost every neighborhood. When there are hot embers in the tandoor, the bread made with dough stuck to the wall is called “Tandoor Bread”.
