On December 8, 2024, Islamist-led opposition forces announced that they had captured the Syrian capital Damascus, allowed President Bashar al-Assad to flee, and ended fifty years of Baathist rule in Syria. In response, groups of Syrian refugees living in Turkey flocked to the border crossings in Hatay and formed long lines to return to Syria through the Cilvegozu border crossing in Reyhanli district.
